Happy 4th

Another 4th of July without fireworks, stars and stripes, ... It's hard to even remember what month it is -- they all look alike!
I wore blue and white clothes and a red watch to work -- that was the closest I got to celebrating America's independence.
But here's a strange twist that I didn't even catch until late last night.
Jim left for meetings in Paris yesterday. So some friends, taking pity on me, invited me to join a dinner party at their home. Lovely food, lovely time ...

When I got home, locked myself up tightly in the house, climbed into bed, and picked up the book that I had on my bedstand -- it hit me --
I had just spent the evening of July 4th with a bunch of Brits!!!

So, I read until I fell asleep
that book that I'd been slowly working through
without any previous thought of the season or approaching holiday ...
1776 by David McCullough!!!
Great book!
Great heritage!
Great independence!
Great country!

Sharon,

Glad you had some semblance of community on the fourth. Having been in California for all these years they long ago banned firework sales because of all the problems. Now here we are in Kentucky and for the first time in decades the family and I get to enjoy real fireworks lit off on our street. Tristan had such a blast, he was so excited. So for us, this fourth of July celebration is certainly something fresh.

And yes, America is a great country, the best ever.

Great to hear from you, again, Johnny! Are you feeling at home in Kentucky already?

You know, we never had fireworks displays on the 4th growing up in Alaska ... it was/is too light!!! The big fireworks were always in February for the Fur Rendezvous. I think they do midnight fireworks some places in AK now.

You appreciate the good ole U.S.of A. a lot more after living out of it for awhile, again, I'm sure!

Sharon,

We feel very much at home here in Kentucky. This place is a well kept secret. Louisville has everything a person needs, the transportation system is awesome, no traffic, but the blend of city and countryside are what does it for us. There is so much water here, rivers, creeks, ponds, lakes, etc. And it is so green here, I can't remember when I last saw so many shades of green.

We are really enjoying ourselves and are very pleased with our decision to come here.

I think that most people should leave the US in order to better appreciate it. If more people did that, we might actually have a more prideful nation.

Johnny,

Wow! It sounds lovely! Water is my absolutely favorite thing is God's creation -- from little creeks to major oceans! And I think I'm a country girl with city-girl tastes, so to speak. That's why I liked Denver so much -- great concerts and restaurants and shopping and so close to the woods, mountains, and water!

Yes, national pride would increase immensely if everyone lived on another continent for even 6 months!

Cheers
Sharon

I was born on the 4th of July (to quote someone - maybe Springsteen) It's true. I can tap dance.

I was always so happy to be born that day. I was instilled with an extra identity. Not a blind allegiance, but one that could examine good and bad behavior and choose. Sometimes I am proud, other times ashamed. But still there is that unconditional love and hope that we can choose the right path as a group here in the USA. Not the path of arrogance, but the path of love and encouragement and hope and understanding.

This birthday was the first in my 48 years that I did not see the fireworks. I wonder if there is any significance to that.

Thanks for thinking of the 4th where you are. 1776, the musical, is one of my favorites. I'll have to read the book you mentioned. Don't know if it's the same story but if not, I'm sure it's captivating just the same.

Miss you and Jim!

Susan,

Great to hear from you! No fireworks on your Bday? -- hard to imagine! I'm sure there's no significance to that!
Happy 48th 4th of July!

I have absolutely loved your pictures from Greece and Rome. I fell in love with Greece in '80 and would have moved there in an instant. My son is in Turkey right now and seeing Roman sites. Wish you could have been at the Shane Claiborne thing last night in Denver. p.s. are you getting my email?

Jenny,

I'm so glad you've enjoyed the photos. I took an unbelievable amount of shots because everything was so amazing!

All through the Greek isles, my refrain was "I could live here ...!"

No, I've not been getting emails from you. :-(

Love,
Sharon
